RWCHR International Chair Irwin Cotler and RWCHR Senior Fellow Vladimir Kara-Murza took part in one of the most important global Magnitsky conferences, organized by Human Rights First and the Jackson Foundation, which also featured the architect of U.S. Magnitsky legislation Senator Ben Cardin, the founder of the global Magnitsky movement Bill Browder, and parliamentarians from Europe, Australia, and Japan. The theme of the conference was “Multilateralizing Global Magnitsky Sanctions”, focusing in particular on the important role of civil society and parliaments in globalizing the reach of sanctions frameworks.

RWCHR International Chair Irwin Cotler published a statement commemorating the Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners in Iran, calling for the release of all political prisoners in Iran and the imposition of Magnitsky Sanctions on President Ibrahim Raisi, and other “Architects of Repression”, as called for in the RWCHR report titled “Realizing Rights Over Repression in Iran”.

RWCHR Legal Counsel Yonah Diamond and RWCHR Senior Fellow Professor John Packer participated in a high-level conference on the atrocities targeting Uyghurs in Xinjiang, China, hosted by the University of Newcastle. Yonah chaired a roundtable discussion of scholars and researchers concerning forced labour and birth prevention policies in Xinjiang, while Professor Packer chaired a panel on evidence gathering pertaining to linguistic, cultural and religious destruction in the region.

Special Envoy Irwin Cotler was the headline speaker at an event commemorating the mass murder of 23,600 Jews in just two days in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Ukraine, then part of the former Soviet Union. This was the first mass murder to take place in Eastern Europe, and marked the launch of Operation Barbarossa and the start of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe. Special Envoy Cotler spoke about the pattern of indifference and inaction in the face of mass atrocity that led to this tragic event, much like the next mass killing that took place shortly after in Babyn Yar.

Two major discussions were held on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the Durban Conference, during which Special Envoy Irwin Cotler - along with UN Special Rapporteur and RWCHR Senior Fellow Ahmed Shaheed - spoke of how the first world conference against racism in the 21st century turned into a conference of racism and hate against Jews, singling out one people for selective opprobrium and indictment. The conference became a launching pad for the new, virulent antisemitism, and a legacy of hate that we still see manifesting today.

L'Envoyé spécial Irwin Cotler était l'orateur principal lors d'un événement commémorant le meurtre de masse de 23 600 Juifs en seulement deux jours à Kamianets-Podilskyi, en Ukraine, qui faisait alors partie de l'ex-Union soviétique. Ce fut le premier meurtre de masse à avoir lieu en Europe de l'Est et a marqué le lancement de l'opération Barbarossa et le début de l'Holocauste en Europe de l'Est. La conférence est devenue une rampe de lancement pour le nouvel antisémitisme virulent et un héritage de haine que nous voyons encore se manifester aujourd'hui.
